Speaker Profile


Dr. Noor Hayaty obtained her BDS, (Malaya) MSc in Conservative Dentistry (London) and PhD in Dental Materials (Newcastle) in 1984, 1987 and 1995 respectively. Her 35 years of clinical practice has been interspersed by teaching and learning, research and management roles. She is currently a contract professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya and the Director of National Cheng Kung University Overseas Hub (NCKU-OH). She served as Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia between April 2020 to April 2022, prior to which she was at the University of Malaya (UM) for 33 years where she served as the Head of Department of Conservative Dentistry and Deputy Dean (Development; Research and Innovation) at the Faculty of Dentistry and in 2013 she was appointed as the Dean of Health and Well-being Research Cluster, where she facilitates an interdisciplinary network of UM researchers in a broad range of research areas and innovation. She also contributed towards promoting dental research through the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Regional Development Program in countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia in her capacity as Secretary, President Elect, President and Immediate Past President of the IADR Southeast Asian Division.

Her research interests include biomaterials, prosthodontics, regenerative medicine and dental education. As a dedicated teacher, she involves herself in dental education research where soft skills, reflective teaching and learning, and clinical competencies are amongst her areas of interest. She often takes time to reflect and engage in endless discussions to make teaching and learning interesting and fruitful for her students.

Dr. Noor Hayaty was a member of the curriculum review committee and the Steering Committee for General Clinical Practice when the Faculty of Dentistry UM embarked on an integrated curriculum. She is an experienced MQA panel for dental program accreditation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She was the Chairman for the specialty training for Prosthodontics, council member of the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC 2018-2019) and currently serves the MDC as a member of the Dental Professional Qualifying Examination and Dental Specialists Evaluation Committee.

Abstract :

This forum discussion aims to provide insight into the various career progression pathways available to dentists, beyond clinical practice. Our renowned panellists, Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Mohd Zain and Prof. Dr. Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim, are both experts in the field of dentistry and have extensive experience in academia, research, and clinical practice. They will share their personal experiences and provide guidance to aspiring dentists who are interested in pursuing a career beyond clinical practice.

On the first day of the panel discussion, both Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Mohd Zain and Prof. Dr. Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim will discuss the different specialties within dentistry and the training and certification requirements for each. They will provide insights into the benefits and challenges of pursuing a career in academia and research, and the opportunities available to dentists to transition into leadership roles in dental organisations and hospitals (TBC).
