Abstract

The global burden of periodontal disease is significant. In Malaysia alone, 38.2% of citizens have moderate to severe periodontal disease. Treating periodontal disease is costly and time-consuming. With the ever rising cost of healthcare, conventional approaches in the past may not be sustainable.

Three main approaches will be discussed in this lecture. Firstly, the responsibility of the operator in assessing risk factors and disease progression. Capitalizing digital imaging, cautious antibiotics usage and comprehensive initial assessments help make periodontal treatment sustainable.

Secondly, patient empowerment in oral hygiene and awareness of the disease. Thirdly, we will discuss approaches to be done collectively as a community along with policy makers as shared responsibility in addressing this disease. Periodontal disease is here to stay. The approach to this disease requires a new perspective for it to be sustainable.
