Dr. Marcio Maia

Dr Marcio Maia is a dentist with over 19 years of clinical experience and a strong passion for teaching, research, and innovation in modern dentistry. He holds postgraduate specialisations in Implant Dentistry and Endodontics in Brazil, as well as a Master’s degree in Dentistry, which guided him into academic lecturing early in his career.

Dr Maia has presented at major dental events across Latin America, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, and Malaysia, including CIOSP, ABROS, the Latin American Osseointegration Congress, IDEM Singapore 2024, the New Zealand Dental Expo, the National Dental Care Summit, and the Malaysian Association of Prosthodontics Congress 2025. He has delivered numerous courses in Australia and overseas on implantology and restorative dentistry. He is an active member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS), and the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dr Maia has been living and practising in Adelaide, South Australia since 2020.

This 50-minute lecture delivers a concise, evidence-based overview of contemporary dental whitening, focusing on clarifying common myths and reinforcing scientifically supported clinical practices. The session reviews the mechanisms of tooth discoloration, the action of hydrogen and carbamide peroxide, and the biological factors that influence whitening outcomes.

Participants will explore and debunk frequent misconceptions, including:

● Does whitening damage enamel?

● Can existing restorations be whitened?

● Are natural or home remedies equally effective?

● Should our patients follow a “white diet” during whitening? What does the scientific evidence actually show?

In addition, we will discuss the new perspectives around composite restorations in today’s highly demanding aesthetic world, including how whitening integrates with restorative planning and aesthetic outcomes.
